French Onion Tart Recipe
Ingredients:
1 sheet of puff pastry
3 small to medium yellow onions, sliced
2 garlic cloves, minced
olive oil
balsamic glaze
Kosher salt
1/2–3/4 cup freshly Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
Egg wash: 1 egg whisked together with 1 tablespoon of water
Instructions:
Step 1: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Step 2: Prepare a large baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
Step 3: Slice onions in half and slice thinly into half moons. Set aside 16 slices for your tarts and the rest will go into a pan to be caramelized.
Step 4: In a sauté pan on medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add in the onions and stir for 2 minutes. Sprinkle with kosher salt, stir again, then reduce the heat to medium-low and continue to stir the onions every 2 minutes or so, scraping down the sides and bottom of the pan each time. Continue this process for about 15-20 minutes to get perfectly caramelized onions. If they start to stick to the pan, add a tablespoon or two of water to loosen the onions and deglaze the pan. When there is 1 minute left of cook time, add minced garlic to the pan and sauté until fragrant.
Step 5: On a surface dusted with flour, roll out the puff pastry until it’s an inch or two larger on all sides. Cut the pastry into 4 equal rectangles.
Step 6: Time to put together your tart! Begin by drizzling olive oil onto the parchment paper, followed by a drizzle of balsamic glaze. For each tart, artfully place 4 onion slices over the oil and vinegar mixture. Generously grate Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese over the onions, and then layer on the caramelized onions. Gently position a puff pastry rectangle on top, and give it a brush of egg wash. Use a fork to crimp the edges of the puff pastry, pressing down on the parchment paper firmly to ensure a secure seal. Repeat these steps for the remaining 3 pastries.

Step 7: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until the pastry has risen and the top is a rich golden color.
Step 8: Remove from oven, flip over and top with extra freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. Enjoy!
